thesis abstract
the prodigal species: the evolution of worldviews on nature and using context to communicate ecological values in america
marylhurst university, 02002
from introduction; “this paper is an exploration of the attitudes leading to the situation the human race faces today rather than the environmental problems themselves. it argues for the importance and acknowledgment of planetary systems, and connects historical worldviews of growth and development to the exploitation of natural, human and moral capital. currently, american culture places high regard on values that encourage this exploitation. explaining these attitudes in an american context can help promote new ideas to the united states that forge an evolved understanding of humans' place in nature. it is an attempt to show how culture and economics have influenced each other to condone the current state of environmental neglect and how each is integral to approaching the challenges faced by society today.”
