Give Local Currency
Winter 2009

Support the community and build a new economy

By Ann Kramer

The current economy is in recession—and perhaps even heading for a depression. Daily news reports are bleak and consumer spending has shrunk dramatically. It is easy to feel overwhelmed, depressed and powerless. But the Columbia Gorge region already has in place a terrific way to negotiate this economic downturn and build a strong local economy.

Local currency can be used to support a local economy—which is where most of our ‘life’ takes place. The word economy originally meant “management of the household.” So even if we’re in a depression, we will still need to ‘manage the household’—or live life! Which means, life—or the economy—goes on even if the banks stop lending and consumers stop consuming at the massive levels that we’ve been trained to think was necessary for the ‘economy’ to run. We still need to eat, educate our children, care for the elderly, take hikes in the woods, have our teeth cleaned and get a flu shot!

The great thing is that on a local level we have the capacity here in the Gorge to meet most of the needs we have in order to live life. In other words, we have the ability to build a thriving local economy where we work and support each other.

We can grow our own food, provides lots of services like health care, construction and household repair work as well as educating our children and enjoying the natural beauty of the world we live in. This is not dependent on federal dollars—we can do a lot of this work using local currency. Yes, we’ll still have some need for federal dollars to pay for things like gasoline for the car or heating bills, but if more and more of us use RiverHOURS our local economy could grow significantly simply by using this local currency.

So, if you’re wondering what to ‘give’ someone for the holidays—how about giving RiverHOURS and encouraging them to spend it in the local economy! That spreads the giving around to the entire community and builds businesses that support the life we want here in the Gorge. The more of us who use RiverHOURS, the better our local economy can be even when riding
the waves of the current recession.

Happy Holidays all…
