Mobile Market Rolls into Rural Gorge Communitites
Summer 2008

GGFN logo

A vibrant farmers’ market in every major community in the Gorge is a long-term goal of GGFN. To meet this end, they are launching an exciting new program. This summer you may see a large box truck roll into your town with the new Gorge Grown logo emblazoned on the sides. Inside will be a cornucopia of locally grown produce for sale. This project will focus on communities in our region that lack sufficient access to fresh produce and is opening new markets for local farmers. It is a true win/win.

spend your RiverHOURS on locally grown food

As with the Thursday evening Gorge Grown Farmers’ Market, the GGFN is proud to be accepting WIC coupons and RiverHOURS. They want this market to be accessible to all and help to increase food security, nutritional health and community pride wherever they go. GGFN’s vision is for other farmers, backyard gardeners and value added producers to join the network and help create a viable market in each community served. This pilot year will help refine the operation with the hopes of expanding in years to come. Gorge Grown has been planning this project for some time and is thrilled to get the operation on the road.

the mobile market finds support throughout the Gorge

The mobile market is truly a community driven project. Funding from Oregon Investment Board, Providence Hospital, other community partners, local business and private sponsors made this dream a reality. The GGFN is honored to have support throughout the Gorge and to bring this mobile market to a community near you.

The GGFN was encouraged by the level of excitement and appreciation in every community they approached about visiting this year. Their capacity for the pilot year is limited, but they look
forward to serving the whole region in years to come. For farmers in the network, this is a wonderful opportunity for them to expand their operations. It is just not feasible for them to spend time selling at multiple markets during the growing season. We need them tending the crops and managing their farms, but we also need their food in even the most rural settings. This issue of distribution came out of a large stakeholder meeting back in the fall of 2007; the idea for the mobile market has been developing ever since.

other benefits of the mobile market

The mobile market will do much more than allow for the delivery of fresh produce to underserved areas. It will also serve as the platform for community outreach and the distribution of educational materials for the Gorge Grown Food Network. It will be an ideal venue to discuss issues such as living wages for farmers, reasons to support local agriculture, food security, food preservation and the recruitment of new farmers. It is a privilege to live in an area that is addressing these issues collectively.

Visit the market often, thank the sponsors and help this project succeed. If you, or your business, are interested in supporting the mobile market, please contact the Gorge Grown Food Network by phone at 541-490-6420 or email sarah@gorgegrown.com.

We’ll see you at the market this summer!!
