Sustainability Committee Convenes in Hood River
Spring 2009

Hood River has a new group dedicated to promoting sustainability! Co-chaired by Dawna Armstrong, Hood River City Councilmember, and Nick Southall,
Environmental Consultant, the group formed a couple of months ago. Dawna
Armstrong said about the group so far, “The idea of a sustainability committee that focuses on the city and has strong support from City Council has been kicking around for several years and the time seems right to now move forward with this effort.”

Although the group began with the city as a focus, many participants come from around the county and are looking at ideas that will affect the wider community. Dawna describes the meetings to date, “We have had two meetings so far. The first was a gathering of leaders in town who are already leading sustainable efforts in various ways. It was amazing just to have everyone in one room talking about common goals. We had a few key people talk about where we are now, and then we brainstormed about all of the ‘green dreams’ we have.

Our second meeting, we broke into key groups and did an exercise to evaluate the most feasible projects we could begin with. Our goals are to simultaneously accomplish some easy projects and start to work on larger projects that have significant impact.” Armstrong acknowledges that there has been a lot of work on sustainability locally in the past few years and points out, “We also are committed to avoiding duplicating efforts of any of the great organizations already in town. Our
sub-groups, which coincide with our goals are: transportation, energy, waste, water, outreach, building/planning/landscaping, eco-tourism, and mission/goals (which are being refined as we move forward).”

Finally, the committee has come up with a tentative mission statement: “To add to the region’s progress by harnessing the power of community to conserve and enhance our local resources, safeguard human and environmental health in our region, improve our vibrant and diverse economy, and improve the livability and quality of life for the City of Hood River. We will strive to avoid duplicating efforts and also partner with other regional efforts to achieve the same goals.”

Anyone interested in participating in HRSC should contact Dawna and the city to find out how to get involved.
